CNIC in English: Translation, Notarization & Overseas Use Guide

Your receiving authority decides whether it needs an English translation of your Pakistani identity card. Check the card, the application instructions and any separate authentication requirement before preparing it.

Start with the document request

Does “CNIC in English” mean a translation?

A Pakistani CNIC may need an English translation when an embassy, immigration authority, foreign court, bank, university or employer requires it and does not accept its Urdu-language details. Translation, certification, notarization, MOFA attestation and apostille serve different purposes; the receiving authority decides which records and formalities it accepts.

First check whether the CNIC is required at all. An identity card, a child’s registration certificate, a NICOP and a passport are different documents. Translating one does not turn it into another.

What Is a CNIC, and What Information Does It Show?

A Computerised National Identity Card is a NADRA identity document for Pakistani citizens aged 18 or older. Card versions differ, so a translation must follow the entries on the particular card rather than a remembered template.

NADRA distinguishes standard CNICs, Smart CNICs with a secure chip, and newer QR-code forms. A NICOP is the National Identity Card for Overseas Pakistanis, a separate identity document for Pakistani citizens residing abroad. “Smart ID card” describes a card format; it does not by itself tell you whether the document is a CNIC or NICOP.

Check the name, father’s or husband’s name as labelled, identity number, date of birth, gender, issue and expiry information, addresses and any other printed text actually present. Their position and language can vary. Include both sides in the source record; describe non-text features where relevant rather than reproducing a signature, photograph or code. Do not decode a QR code and add its contents as though printed on the card.

If you searched for “CNIC English mein”, “CNIC ka English tarjuma” or شناختی کارڈ انگلش ترجمہ, the first question is which authority wants the document and in what form.

Official basis: NADRA CNIC information and card types; NADRA NICOP information. The checklist above is practical guidance for reading your actual card, not a claim that every version has an identical layout.

Does My CNIC Need to Be Translated into English?

It depends on the receiving authority, the language of your card and the application. A translation rule does not establish that every applicant must submit a CNIC.

Obtain the current document checklist or written request. Identify the required record, accepted languages, translator’s declaration and any copy-certification or authentication condition. Do not order a notarization merely because the word “certified” appears: ask what that term means in the recipient’s instructions.

Pakistani CNIC for a UK visa

For a UK visitor application, GOV.UK requires a full, independently verifiable translation when a submitted document is not in English or Welsh. The accompanying declaration identifies the translator, gives their signature, contact details and translation date, and confirms accuracy. The visitor guidance also requires a valid passport or travel document; it does not make a CNIC a universal substitute.

Family-visa guidance separately requires a certified translation of documents outside English or Welsh. Follow the rules for your actual route, rather than assuming that a visitor checklist covers every UK application.

Official basis: GOV.UK visitor supporting documents; GOV.UK family-visa evidence; GOV.UK translation certification guidance.

CNIC translation for USCIS

A CNIC submitted to USCIS with non-English entries needs an English rendering of the entire record. Under 8 CFR 103.2(b)(3), the translator must attest that nothing has been omitted, that the rendering is accurate and that they can competently translate the source language into English. The provision does not itself impose notarization. Whether the CNIC belongs in your evidence package is determined by the form and case instructions.

USCIS applications, embassy visa processing and foreign courts are separate contexts. Do not transfer the USCIS rule to every US institution or assume that an English name alone accounts for Urdu addresses or other entries.

Official basis: 8 CFR 103.2(b)(3) and supporting-document provisions. Check the applicable USCIS form instructions as well.

CNIC for UAE use

Ask the UAE recipient whether it requires this identity record, an English translation, an Arabic translation or another document. UAE MOFA’s attestation service accepts an original in Arabic or English, or one accompanied by a legally certified translation, subject to its competent-authority requirements. That attestation rule is not a blanket instruction that every UAE visa applicant needs a translated CNIC.

The UAE Embassy Islamabad page says Pakistan-issued documents going through its attestation route need Pakistan MOFA attestation first, with a stated exception for certain medical records. It also describes a digital process requiring the physical original. Confirm how an identity-card copy and its translation are handled before sending them; the general pages do not settle every CNIC-specific submission.

Official basis: UAE MOFA attestation requirements; UAE Embassy Islamabad attestation information. Confirm the document-specific route with the mission or recipient.

Other destinations, institutions and foreign courts

There is no single checklist covering all countries, banks, employers, universities or courts. A court may specify its own translator credentials and evidence formalities. Give the translator the actual written request, including any language other than English, instead of relying on an informal phrase such as “embassy format”.

CNIC vs B-Form, NICOP and Passport: Which Document Is Required?

Use the identity document named in the receiving authority’s checklist. These records have different functions, and a translation does not make them interchangeable.

Identify the record before translating it
RecordMain functionWhat to check
CNIC / Smart CNICNADRA identity document for adult Pakistani citizens.Actual card version, both sides, languages and current validity.
B-Form / CRCChild Registration Certificate for a child under 18; commonly called B-Form.Whether the recipient needs CRC, a birth certificate or both. A translated CRC is not a passport.
NICOP / Smart NICOPNADRA identity document for Pakistani citizens residing abroad.Whether the recipient specifically accepts NICOP and whether relevant text needs translation.
PassportTravel document used for international travel and application identity evidence.Recipient’s passport validity and page-copy instructions. An identity-card translation does not replace it.

Official basis: NADRA identity-document categories; NADRA Services Charter (CRC/B-Form terminology); UK visitor travel-document requirements (UK visitor scope).

Translation, Certification, Notarization, MOFA Attestation and Apostille: What Is the Difference?

Translation explains the text in another language; the other processes concern a declaration, a notarial act or authentication. One label does not establish that all five steps have been performed.

What each process does and does not establish
ProcessPurposeLimit
TranslationRenders the source text into the required language.Does not renew, correct or authenticate the original card.
CertificationA translator’s declaration meeting the recipient’s instructions.Required wording and credentials vary by recipient.
NotarizationA separate notarial act, such as witnessing a declaration or signature. Its effect depends on the act and jurisdiction; a stamp alone does not prove every translated entry correct.
MOFA attestationAuthentication through Pakistan’s foreign-ministry procedure.Attesting a true copy of an identity card is different from certifying translation accuracy.
ApostilleAuthentication of a public document’s origin under an applicable Convention route.Does not certify content. Check destination applicability, objections and the eligible document or notarial act.

Official basis: GOV.UK certification guidance; Pakistan MOFA SOPs; HCCH Apostille resources; California Secretary of State explanation of apostille limits (general distinction, not Pakistan processing rules).

Does a CNIC Translation Need Notarization or Attestation?

Only the applicable recipient instructions can answer that for your submission. An English translation is not automatically notarized, MOFA-attested or apostilled.

Pakistan MOFA’s SOPs state that copies of CNIC, POC and NICOP can be attested as true copies when the original is produced before the attesting officer. This describes a copy-authentication procedure; it is not a statement that the ministry checks the accuracy of every translation. The same SOPs contain language rules for documents and translations. Confirm which document, copy, declaration and original need to be presented for your particular route.

Pakistan appears in the HCCH Apostille status table, with entry into force dated 9 March 2023 and an objections marker. Before using an apostille route, check whether the Convention operates between Pakistan and the destination, and what the competent authority can authenticate. Do not presume that the plastic card itself, any photocopy or any unsigned translation can be apostilled.

For UAE use, follow the mission’s current attestation instructions where attestation is required. Do not substitute a generic apostille checklist for that route. For USCIS, keep the translator’s required declaration separate from any extra notarization a different recipient requests.

Official basis: Pakistan MOFA identity-copy and language SOPs; HCCH Convention status table and objections; Pakistan’s listed apostille authority.

What Should You Provide for an Accurate CNIC Translation?

Provide readable images of the front and back, the recipient’s instructions and a reliable reference for English name spellings. Supporting records can clarify spelling, but must not silently change what the card says.

  • Scan both sides flat, with all edges visible and no glare, cropped fields or fingers covering text.
  • Check that the identity number, birth date, issue and expiry details are readable. Do not guess an unclear digit.
  • Identify the card type: CNIC, Smart CNIC, NICOP or another NADRA record.
  • Provide the passport’s spelling of your name and, where relevant, the father’s or husband’s name as a separate reference.
  • Explain whether permanent and present addresses differ. Keep their source labels and details distinct.
  • State the country, application type, receiving authority and requested language. Include its written certification or attestation instructions.
  • Account for stamps, amendments and annotations. Mark blank or illegible fields honestly.
  • Review the final text against the source before submission, especially names, numbers and dates.

Do not post identity records in public comments or on this website. Before sharing a scan privately, confirm who will receive it, why the full record is needed and how it will be handled. A redacted copy may assist an initial enquiry, but a complete translation requires readable source material through an agreed private channel.

This is a preparation checklist. Full-translation rules in the UK visitor guidance and USCIS regulation inform the need to account for the complete submitted record.

What If Names or Addresses Differ Between My CNIC and Passport?

Identify the difference before deciding whether it is a transliteration variation or a conflict in the records. A translator should not quietly rewrite the CNIC to match the passport.

Urdu-to-English spellings can vary without changing the underlying name. A passport reference can guide a faithful rendering where it corresponds to the source. If a given name, relationship entry or date is actually different, preserve the source information and ask the recipient whether it wants an explanation, additional evidence or correction of the original through the issuing authority.

An older permanent address and a current residence address can describe different facts. Translate the labels and text as recorded; do not replace an old address with a new one supplied in a message. Identify any necessary translator’s note as a note, not as an original entry. NADRA provides modification services, but the right correction depends on the actual record and supporting evidence.

Official administrative route: NADRA PakID FAQs and modification services. Whether a discrepancy needs correction or explanation is a case-specific question for NADRA and the receiving authority.

What If My CNIC Is Expired, Damaged or Has Unclear Text?

A translation can report what an expired record says, but it cannot extend that record’s validity. Damaged or unreadable entries must not be invented.

Tell the recipient that the card has expired and ask whether it accepts it for the intended purpose or needs a renewed card. Keep the expiry date visible in the translated text. If you obtain a replacement, check whether the recipient needs a translation of that replacement rather than the older card.

For glare or blur, try a clearer scan first. For physical damage or missing text, identify illegible portions and ask about replacement or other evidence. Do not reconstruct a number from memory or add an address from a different record as if it appears on the damaged card.

Official renewal and replacement route: NADRA PakID renewal and reprint information. Acceptance of expired evidence remains for the recipient to determine.

Common Problems With CNIC Translations

An incomplete source, altered entry or missing declaration can leave the recipient unable to assess the record. Check content and formalities separately.

  • Translating only selected fields: a name-only extract may not meet a full-translation requirement.
  • Sending only the front: addresses or other relevant text on the reverse can be omitted.
  • Assuming every Smart card is fully English: inspect the actual record, including both sides.
  • Changing spellings without checking the Urdu: reference documents should clarify the source, not override it.
  • Confusing a certificate with authentication: a translator’s statement, notarial act and MOFA attestation address different questions.
  • Using machine output without review: names, abbreviated addresses and administrative labels need careful checking; software alone does not provide the required human declaration.
  • Choosing a document by convenience: a translated CNIC does not replace a requested passport, CRC or birth certificate.

When an application also involves a marriage record, read Nikah Nama in English for the separate distinction between a marriage contract and registration certificate.

Common questions

CNIC in English FAQs

Do I need my CNIC translated for a UK visa?

Check whether your visa route asks for the CNIC and which language its entries use. UK visitor guidance requires a full, independently verifiable translation for submitted documents outside English or Welsh. It also asks for a valid passport or travel document. Translating a CNIC does not replace that travel-document requirement.

What does USCIS require for a CNIC containing Urdu?

If that card is submitted as evidence, the foreign-language text needs a full English translation under 8 CFR 103.2(b)(3). The translator certifies that it is complete and accurate and that they are competent to translate into English. Check the form instructions separately to determine whether this identity record is requested.

Does a CNIC translation always need notarization?

No single notarization requirement applies to every recipient. A translator’s declaration and a notarial act are different things. The USCIS translation provision does not itself demand notarization. Other institutions may request additional formalities, so obtain their written instructions and identify precisely which signature, declaration or copy they want notarized.

Does an English translation mean my CNIC is MOFA-attested?

No. Translation changes the language of the recorded text; attestation is a separate authentication procedure. Pakistan MOFA describes true-copy attestation of CNIC, POC and NICOP copies on production of the original before the officer. Confirm whether your recipient wants that copy procedure, authentication of another document, or additional steps for the translation.

Can I translate only the front of my CNIC?

Provide both sides whenever the whole card is being submitted under a full-translation rule. A reverse side can contain addresses or other relevant details. If an institution explicitly asks for a limited extract, confirm that scope in writing and identify the result as an extract rather than a complete translation of the card.

Is an English name on a Smart CNIC enough?

It is not enough to decide from the name alone. Look at every relevant entry on both sides and check the receiving authority’s language rule. If all required information is already in an accepted language, ask whether a separate translation is necessary. A mixed-language card may still contain Urdu details that need accounting for.

Can a translation of an expired CNIC still be used?

The text can be translated, including the recorded expiry date, but translation does not renew the card. The recipient decides whether an expired record is suitable evidence for its purpose. Ask before ordering, particularly if a current identity document is required. NADRA renewal and replacement processes are separate from translation.

What happens if a number or address cannot be read?

Try to obtain a clearer image or an undamaged source first. If the text remains unreadable, the translation should identify that limitation rather than fill it from memory or another document without explanation. Ask the recipient whether the incomplete record needs replacement or supplementary evidence before it can be submitted.

Can I use Google Translate for an official submission?

It can help with informal understanding, but output needs careful checking against the actual card. Names, address abbreviations and administrative terms can be mishandled. Where a recipient requires a translator’s declaration of accuracy or competence, software output alone does not meet that requirement. Arrange appropriate human review and the required declaration.

Should the English spelling match my passport?

A passport spelling can guide transliteration when it faithfully represents the Urdu name. It should not conceal a different name or entry on the CNIC. Flag discrepancies before finalizing the translation, distinguish spelling variants from conflicting records, and ask whether the authority needs an explanation, supporting evidence or a source-record correction.

Can my current address replace an old address on the card?

The translation should preserve the address and its label as they appear on the source. Do not replace it with a current address supplied separately. If your recipient needs current-residence evidence, provide that as a separate record or explain the difference through its required procedure. Translation does not update NADRA records.

Can a B-Form or NICOP be translated instead?

Those records can contain text requiring translation, but they serve different functions and are not automatic substitutes for a requested CNIC. Check which document the recipient accepts. The linked commercial page clearly describes standard and Smart CNICs; confirm NICOP or B-Form scope with the provider instead of assuming it is included.

Is English sufficient for UAE use?

Ask the specific UAE recipient which language and document it needs. UAE MOFA’s general attestation service refers to Arabic or English originals or a legally certified translation, but this does not settle every institution’s requirements. If mission attestation is requested, confirm the identity-copy and translation route before preparing or sending documents.

Does every overseas CNIC need an apostille?

No. An apostille is relevant only where authentication is required and the applicable Convention route covers the destination and document. Check the current HCCH status table, objections and competent-authority instructions. An apostille authenticates origin rather than translation accuracy and does not replace a recipient’s document, language or identity requirements.

Where can I arrange a CNIC English translation?

The PKLegal.org CNIC service page linked above provides the ordering process and current commercial details. Share the recipient’s instructions before confirming the work, including any requested certification or authentication. This PKLegal.net guide explains the record and preparation questions; it does not take orders or guarantee a receiving institution’s acceptance.
