Nikah Nama in English: Translation & Overseas Use Guide
An Urdu Nikah Nama may need a complete English translation for overseas submission. The record, certification and authentication requirements depend on the receiving authority.

Before you prepare a translation
Start with the record and the receiving authority.
A Pakistani Nikah Nama written in Urdu may need a complete English translation when it is submitted to an embassy, immigration authority, foreign court, university or another organization that does not accept Urdu documents. Translation, certification, notarization and MOFA attestation are different processes, and the exact requirement depends on the receiving authority and country.
The original Nikah Nama and the Marriage Registration Certificate (MRC) are related marriage records but should not automatically be treated as interchangeable.
What Is a Pakistani Nikah Nama?
A Nikah Nama records a Muslim marriage and its contractual particulars. It is different from the separate certificate confirming marriage registration.
The completed form identifies the bride and groom, their fathers and other marriage particulars. Its entries may cover Haq Mehr (dower), witnesses, special conditions, the Nikah Registrar, and signatures or thumb impressions. Read the actual entries: a printed field may be blank, amended or completed by hand, and those distinctions matter.
“Nikahnama” is another common spelling. If you are looking for “Nikah Nama English mein” or نکاح نامہ انگلش ترجمہ, start by identifying which record you hold and who will receive it.
Official context: Punjab Police guidance on completing Nikah Nama columns (Punjab scope).
Nikah Nama vs NADRA/Union Council Marriage Registration Certificate
The Nikah Nama contains marriage-contract entries; an MRC confirms registration. Calling an MRC a “NADRA marriage certificate” does not mean NADRA is always its issuing authority.
For Pakistani Muslim citizens, the US State Department lists Union Councils, Municipal Corporations, CDA and Cantonment Boards as registration and certificate authorities. Punjab’s local-government guidance identifies the concerned Union Council or Municipal Committee for its computerized certificate. Check the issuer printed on your own record.
| Feature | Nikah Nama | Marriage Registration Certificate |
|---|---|---|
| Purpose | Records the marriage and agreed contractual particulars. | Records civil registration of the marriage. |
| Contractual detail | Contains the completed contract fields. | Usually a summary; inspect the actual format. |
| Haq Mehr | Check amount, payment terms and handwritten entries. | Do not assume it reproduces the dower terms. |
| Special conditions | May contain important agreed conditions. | Do not assume those conditions are reproduced. |
| Language and format | Often an Urdu printed form with handwritten entries. | May be computerized and bilingual; formats vary. |
| Translation | Translate if its language is not accepted. | Inspect all text, seals and endorsements before deciding. |
| Can both be requested? | Yes. Follow the particular checklist; one is not an automatic substitute for the other. | |
Official basis: Punjab local-government marriage-registration FAQ; US State Department Pakistan civil-document schedule, marriage section. نکاح نامہ اور میرج سرٹیفکیٹ میں فرق concerns both purpose and content.
Does My Nikah Nama Need to Be Translated into English?
It depends on the receiving authority and document language. Identify the application route, requested record and accepted language before commissioning work.
Ask whether the authority needs the Nikah Nama, MRC or both, whether it requires a full translation, and whether authentication is a separate condition. A bilingual MRC does not automatically remove the need to translate an Urdu Nikah Nama that has also been requested.
UK Visa and Immigration Applications
The UK family-visa information page requires certified translations for documents outside English or Welsh. Its linked certification guidance calls for written confirmation of accuracy, the translation date, and the translator’s name and contact details.
Appendix FM-SE paragraph 1(j), for specified evidence within its scope, requires the original-language document and a complete, independently verifiable translation, dated and signed with translator/company contact details. It additionally requires qualified-translator certification and credentials for leave-to-remain or indefinite-leave-to-remain applications. Check your route and application checklist; visitor guidance alone does not establish family-visa requirements.
Official basis: Family visa evidence guidance, translation certification guidance, and Appendix FM-SE, paragraph 1(j).
Nikah Nama Translation for USCIS or US Immigration
Under 8 CFR 103.2(b)(3), foreign-language material submitted to USCIS needs a full English translation and the translator’s certification of completeness, accuracy and competence to translate into English.
Does USCIS require a USCIS-approved translator? That provision does not prescribe an approved-translator list or require notarization. Check the specific form instructions and any request for evidence. USCIS filings and US consular visa processing have separate instructions: the Pakistan reciprocity schedule identifies the MRC as the marriage certificate for Muslim applicants; it is not a universal rule that any translated Nikah Nama replaces that certificate.
Official basis: 8 CFR 103.2(b)(3); Pakistan reciprocity schedule. Check the consular checklist for your interview location.
Nikah Nama for UAE Use
UAE MOFA’s attestation service accepts originals in Arabic or English, or originals accompanied by a legally certified translation. It also sets authentication conditions. An English translation alone does not finish that process or establish every UAE authority’s language requirement.
The current English Islamabad mission page states that Pakistan-issued documents require Pakistan MOFA attestation, subject to its stated medical-document exception. Confirm whether your receiving body needs Arabic translation, which record it wants, and its current submission route.
Official basis: UAE MOFA attestation conditions; UAE Embassy Islamabad English attestation information.

Does a Nikah Nama Need MOFA Attestation?
MOFA attestation is a separate authentication process. Preparing an English translation does not itself trigger or complete attestation; the destination’s instructions determine whether it is needed.
Pakistan MOFA’s SOPs list the original registrar-signed/stamped Nikah Nama with MRC, and supporting bride’s CNIC showing the husband’s name or the specified NADRA family/children registration record. Confirm which alternative applies to your circumstances and check the current SOPs before attending. Do not infer an attestation requirement for every visa from this checklist.
Marriage to a Foreign National
The SOPs additionally call for the foreign spouse’s passport copy, Pakistani visa and date-of-entry evidence. If your circumstances do not fit that wording, seek clarification from MOFA before submission.
Marriage Solemnized Outside Pakistan
The SOPs describe authentication by the local Foreign Office and countersignature by the relevant Pakistani diplomatic mission in that country. Check that mission’s procedure rather than applying the domestic-document route to a foreign-issued record.
Official basis: Pakistan MOFA SOPs, Nikah Nama/MRC section. Checked on 7 October 2026.
Translation, Certification, Notarization, Attestation and Apostille: What Is the Difference?
These processes solve different problems: language, translation assurance, a notarial act, or document authentication. Ask for the process named in the receiving authority’s instructions.
| Process | Meaning | Limit |
|---|---|---|
| Translation | Renders source text in another language. | Does not itself authenticate the original. |
| Certification | A translator’s statement about the translation, as required by the recipient. | Certification wording and credentials depend on the applicable instructions. |
| Notarization | A separate act performed by a notary, such as witnessing a signature. | Its effect depends on the act and jurisdiction; it does not automatically verify every translated fact. |
| MOFA attestation | Authentication through the foreign ministry’s procedure. | Different from translation accuracy certification. |
| Apostille | Authenticates a public document’s origin under the applicable Hague Convention framework. | Does not certify the underlying content or translation accuracy; destination and Convention applicability matter. |
| Embassy/destination attestation | A further authentication stage where the applicable route requires it. | Do not assume the same chain for every country. |
Official basis: HCCH Apostille resources and California Secretary of State explanation of apostille limits. The latter explains the distinction, not the Pakistani issuing process.
What Should You Provide for an Accurate Nikah Nama Translation?
Provide a readable, complete source document and identify the receiving authority. Supporting records can clarify spellings or handwriting, but must not silently replace the source.
- Full-resolution, uncropped scans of every page, including reverse sides with entries, seals or endorsements.
- Passport/CNIC spellings for both spouses and their fathers, clearly labelled as reference information.
- Clarification of difficult handwriting, Urdu addresses, dates and Haq Mehr figures.
- Supporting records where useful, with contradictions identified before finalization.
- The destination, receiving body, application route and any written translation checklist.
- Clear images of stamps, signatures, amendments and marginal notes. Rescan obscured text rather than guessing.
Keep an original scan unchanged. Where text remains illegible, the translation should identify that limitation; a separate note can explain it. Confirm how the recipient wants the source and translation packaged.
Practical preparation guidance; it is not a universal official submission checklist. Destination rules are linked above.
What If My Old Nikah Nama Does Not Contain CNIC Numbers?
It can be translated as it stands. Do not add CNIC numbers from a separate identity document to make an older form look like a modern one.
Distinguish a blank field from a field that does not exist on the form. Translate the wording and entries actually present, and preserve any relevant limitation. Whether an authority needs additional identity evidence or an updated registration record is a separate question; translation cannot repair a deficient civil record.
What If the English Spelling of a Name Is Different?
Some differences are transliteration variants; others are contradictions in the records. Compare the Urdu name with passport, CNIC and MRC spellings before finalizing the translation.
A reference spelling can help where it faithfully represents the same Urdu name. It cannot justify changing a different name, father’s name or other source fact. Flag the discrepancy and ask the receiving authority whether an explanation or correction by the issuing authority is needed. Keep any translator’s note clearly separate from translated source entries.
Common Problems With Nikah Nama Translations
Completeness and source fidelity matter as much as fluent English. Review the finished translation against every part of the source before submission.
- Missing handwritten answers, marginal notes or special conditions.
- Translating only selected fields or one page of a longer record.
- Adding absent CNIC details, addresses or dates from another document.
- Confusing spouses’ or fathers’ names and inconsistent transliteration.
- Misreading Haq Mehr digits, words, units or payment terms.
- Omitting stamps, amendments or obscured text instead of identifying them.
- Assuming notarization and MOFA attestation are interchangeable.
- Assuming a bilingual MRC always replaces the requested Nikah Nama.
- Submitting unreviewed machine output without the required human certification.
These are practical review points, not claimed case histories or measured error rates.

Your questions answered
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Nikah Nama the same as a Marriage Registration Certificate?
No. They are related marriage records with different purposes. The Nikah Nama records contractual particulars, while the MRC records registration. Compare the actual documents rather than relying on informal labels. When a checklist names one record, do not assume the other will be accepted in its place.
Do I need both Nikah Nama and MRC for a visa?
Sometimes, but there is no single checklist for every visa. Identify your country, application route and receiving office, then read the requested civil-document list. If both records are named, prepare both. If the wording is unclear, ask the authority before paying for translation or authentication.
Does an Urdu Nikah Nama need an English translation for a UK visa?
For the family-visa route, GOV.UK requires certified translations of documents outside English or Welsh. Check the UK section above for the linked certification guidance and the scope of Appendix FM-SE. Whether the Nikah Nama itself must be submitted depends on your evidence checklist and circumstances.
What does USCIS require for an Urdu Nikah Nama?
USCIS requires a full English translation with the translator certifying its accuracy, completeness and competence under 8 CFR 103.2(b)(3). Follow the particular form instructions as well. Preserve all source pages and entries, and keep the source document associated with its translation when preparing your application materials.
Does USCIS require a notarized translation?
The general translation rule in 8 CFR 103.2(b)(3) does not impose notarization or an approved-translator list. A separate instruction or evidence request still needs checking. Read the US section above before commissioning extra authentication, and distinguish a USCIS filing from an embassy or consular submission.
Do I need my Nikah Nama translated for the UAE?
Check the receiving body’s accepted language and the record it requests. UAE MOFA’s attestation conditions permit Arabic or English originals, or a legally certified translation accompanying the original. That does not establish every court or immigration office’s requirements. Translation and the authentication route need separate confirmation.
Does translating a Nikah Nama mean it is MOFA-attested?
No. An English rendering and an authentication by the foreign ministry are different outputs. Look for the actual authentication record rather than inferring it from a translator’s stamp or certification. If you ordered translation only, confirm separately whether the receiving authority requires attestation and how to obtain it.
Do I need MOFA attestation before using my Nikah Nama abroad?
The destination and receiving authority determine that requirement. Some submissions may call for authentication and others use different evidence rules. Read the MOFA section and official destination instructions together. Do not treat the availability of a Pakistan attestation service as proof that every overseas application requires it.
Can an old Nikah Nama without CNIC numbers be translated?
Yes, the text actually present can be translated. Missing identity-number fields must not be filled from a modern identity record simply to make the translation resemble a newer form. Ask separately whether your receiving authority requires additional identity evidence, registration documentation or correction of the original record.
Can information from my CNIC be added to the English translation?
It should not be inserted as though it appears in the Nikah Nama. A CNIC can help check a name spelling or clarify identity, but it remains a separate source. If supplementary information is relevant, identify it clearly in a separate note or supporting record and follow the recipient’s instructions.
What if my name differs between my Nikah Nama and passport?
Compare the Urdu text and the English spellings before deciding whether the difference is a transliteration variant or a different recorded name. A reference spelling can assist faithful transliteration. A contradiction needs an explanation or a source-record correction where appropriate; the translator should not silently rewrite the marriage record.
Should stamps and handwritten notes appear in the translation?
Relevant textual content in stamps, annotations, amendments and handwritten answers should be accounted for in a complete translation. A signature or thumb impression can be identified descriptively rather than recreated. If a seal obscures an entry, provide a clearer scan where possible and avoid guessing what it says.
Can I translate only one page of my Nikah Nama?
If you are submitting the whole document under a full-translation requirement, selecting one page is insufficient. Provide every page and any reverse side with relevant entries. For a specifically requested extract, first obtain the receiving authority’s instructions and ensure the limited scope is clearly identified on the resulting translation.
Can I use Google Translate for immigration purposes?
Machine output may help you understand a phrase, but it can miss handwritten entries, names, dower amounts and legal conditions. A tool cannot itself supply a human translator’s competence certification. Before submission, check the destination requirements and arrange competent review and certification wherever the applicable instructions require them.
Where can I order a certified Nikah Nama translation?
Use the PKLegal.org service page linked above for the current process, sample, fee, turnaround and ordering instructions. Tell the provider which authority will receive the document and supply its written requirements. Keep ordering on that service site; this PKLegal.net page explains the records and preparation questions.
